SCHOTTEL acquires majority stake in elkon: combined propulsion and electrical system integration expertise

news-details

The German propulsion expert SCHOTTEL and elkon, the Turkish specialist for electrical system integration, will in future act as partners on the maritime market. The corresponding contract for the acquisition of a majority stake in elkon by the holding company SCHOTTEL Industries GmbH has now been signed in Istanbul, Turkey, and announced at the Nor-Shipping trade fair in Oslo, Norway

"SCHOTTEL becomes a complete system supplier"
SCHOTTEL wants to grow even more strategically with the takeover: "With elkon as a well-known and very successful provider of engineering, design and integration of power electrical systems for ships, we will succeed," explains Stefan Kaul, Managing Director of SCHOTTEL GmbH . “We will expand our portfolio to include everything related to the generation, distribution, storage and management of electrical energy on board ships. SCHOTTEL is becoming the complete system supplier for electric and green propulsion.”

The overall scope is offered as a complement
In the overall scope of both companies, energy-efficient propulsion concepts, hybridization and electrification are now shown as complementary. A special intersection arises in the area of drive hybridization in the new plant and conversion business. Customers can continue to rely on the usual agile, professional and independent performance of both companies on the market. The customer benefit lies in the expansion of both portfolios and the possible commissioning of turnkey solutions for propulsion systems and system integration. On both sides, the option of integrating respective market participants remains open.

"Further development, especially in the direction of green propulsion"
ErtuÄŸ YaÅŸar, Managing Director at elkon: "In the past, SCHOTTEL and elkon have already been commissioned several times independently of one another for projects. Practically every type of ship was involved, from tugboats and ferries to offshore vessels. Both companies therefore play an important role in the decision-making process of customers. In the future, they will benefit from each other and develop further in the direction of green propulsion.”

Stronger internationalization
elkon will make an important leap forward in internationalization: In addition to the previous regional focus on Europe, some countries on the Caspian Sea and the Middle East as well as North America, the customers of the system integrator based in Tuzla (Istanbul) will benefit from the global reach of SCHOTTEL network benefit. It includes more than 170 service technicians and service locations in all major shipping centers around the world.

"Equal partnership"
In the new partnership, elkon and SCHOTTEL are on an equal footing: "Both companies are among the competence leaders in their respective spheres of activity - a position that they have achieved through decades of reliability and a strong focus on customer interests," says Andreas Block, Managing Director of SCHOTTEL Industries GmbH. "The focus is now on bundling competencies in the long term and developing them in a financially strong environment in order to optimally cover the requirements of the future."

SCHOTTEL will take over the majority shares in elkon from the family investment house Vera Capital, the remaining shares will remain with senior elkon engineers and the management. elkon becomes a legally independent subsidiary of SCHOTTEL Industries GmbH, a holding company that, in addition to SCHOTTEL GmbH, already includes automation and transmission technology companies.

The takeover is expected to take effect this spring after an antitrust review.
