Scale Gas receives funding to decarbonise maritime transport in the Canary Islands

news-details
  1. The Enagás subsidiary receives funding from the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda for the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) and BioLNG supply ship in the Canary Islands, which will be operational in 2025
  2. This project is part of the 'Net Zero hive' initiative, promoted by Enagás, to promote decarbonisation in the maritime sector. Likewise, the project contributes to the deployment of the institutional strategy LNGhive2, led by Puertos del Estado

The Enagás subsidiary, Scale Gas, has received funding from the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda to promote the construction of a bunkering ship for the supply of LNG and BioLNG in the Canary Islands. This subsidy, which is channeled through the Support Program for Sustainable and Digital Transport, is part of the Plan for the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience of the Economy.

This project, 'Net Zero hive Canarias' is part of the 'Net Zero hive' initiative promoted by Enagás in its commitment to sustainability and energy transition and to promote decarbonisation in the maritime sector. In addition, the project contributes to the deployment of the institutional strategy LNGhive2, led by Puertos del Estado, for the development of LNG supply points in ports in compliance with the obligations established in Directive 2014/94 on LNG supply infrastructures. alternative fuels for mobility.

The ship will have a capacity of 12,500m3 to carry out  bunkering  of alternative fuels —LNG and BioLNG— and will be put into operation for use by trading companies from June 2025. In addition, it could be adapted to supply ammonia as marine fuel, which would allow the use of hydrogen as a vector for the decarbonization of transport.

As promoter, Scale Gas will receive a total of 15 million euros —the total financial support requested— and plans to begin construction of the ship from June 2023.

About the Net Zero hive initiative

The objective of 'Net Zero hive', which is a continuation of the 'CORE LNGas hive' project and the 'LNGhive2' strategy and which is aligned with European policies to accelerate the decarbonisation of the maritime-port sector, is to promote the use of infrastructures in ports to promote more sustainable energy sources.

Specifically, it proposes to adapt the regasification plants located in Spanish ports and other facilities in the port area of influence to favor the production of low-carbon fuels such as hydrogen, bioLNG or synthetic methane.

Along these lines, the 'LNGhive2' strategy has several active projects, including the construction of two  LNG bunkering ships  : one will soon operate in Barcelona and the other in Algeciras from the end of 2023.

Coordinated drive for the energy transition

'Net Zero hive' is one more example of the continuous public-private collaboration that favors the promotion of decarbonised fuels such as BioLNG.

LNG is an energy that will play a key role in the energy transition to advance zero-emission alternatives in maritime transport, as indicated by the European Union in its FuelEU Maritime regulation, especially at a time like the present in which there is no an economically viable zero emission drive technology.

Low-carbon fuel supply projects for maritime transport and other applications in ports meet the requirements of the aforementioned Directive 2014/94/EU, currently under review, and the Fit For 55 and FuelEU Maritime regulatory packages.

In addition, maritime transport represents about 75% of external trade and 31% of internal trade in the EU in terms of volume. It is the most environmentally friendly type of mobility, with significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions per ton of merchandise transported than other forms of transport.
