Cadmatic develops smarter and more productive shipbuilding with the University of Turku in the EU-funded SEUS project
Cadmatic and the University of Turku are involved in the consortium of industrial companies and universities leading the EU-funded Smart European Shipbuilding (SEUS) project. In the project launched on January 1st, shipbuilding processes are digitized. The goal is to create solutions for the needs of data-driven shipbuilding by developing application platforms that support information management, information exchange and cooperation between different parties in all phases of shipbuilding, from pre-planning to construction.
With the help of the applications, the aim is to reduce the time spent on designing the ship by 30 percent and the time spent on construction and installations by up to 20 percent. In the development, the best experts in the field from the universities and companies belonging to the consortium are used. Two leading European shipyard companies in their field are participating in the pilot. The applications will support data-based decision-making and work processes by utilizing e.g. smart technologies, artificial intelligence and by applying Industry 5.0 principles to shipbuilding. The goal is to develop the competitiveness of European shipbuilding by utilizing the latest information technology and technology.
SEUS is part of the EU's flagship research and innovation program Horizon Europe , which has a budget of 95.5 billion euros. Cadmatic's and the University of Turku's share of the SEUS project's approximately 7 million euros in funding is 2.25 million euros. Cadmatic is responsible for coordinating the technical part of the four-year project.
The SEUS consortium includes eight organizations from five different countries, including the following innovative companies: planning and information management solution provider Cadmatic (Turku), PLM information management solutions developer Contact Software (Germany), SARC BV (Netherlands) and Ulstein Group (Norway) , shipyard companies that manufacture different types of ships and Astilleros Gondan SA (Spain). The consortium also includes the Norwegian University of Technology and Natural Sciences (NTNU) , the University of Turku and the NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands).

The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Turku was founded in 2021. In a short time, it has become a highly sought-after place of study among talented young people who want to get a master's degree in engineering. The faculty has almost 3,000 students and about 50 professors. The faculty works closely with companies in the technology sector, and the amount of its international research funding is growing strongly.
