Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. and Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. are constructing a Panamax-type coal carrier that uses LNG as its main fuel and has a low environmental impact. The ship was completed today and began operation.
On the same day, a naming ceremony was held at the Imari office of Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, President and CEO: Kensuke Namura), and the vessel was named Reimei*1.
LNG-fueled Panamax coal carrier “Reimei”
The vessel is a large coal carrier powered by LNG, operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and will transport coal from overseas for Kyushu Electric Power's coal-fired power plants.
Compared to conventional marine fuel oil, LNG emits approximately 30% less carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), 100% less sulfur oxides (SOx), and 80% less nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are greenhouse gases. A reduction is expected.
The vessel will depart from Imari Port in Saga Prefecture on November 14th, and will carry out shore-to-ship bunkering at Tobata Port in Fukuoka Prefecture on November 15th, where fuel will be supplied directly from the onshore LNG shipping facility to the vessel. is.
In addition to this shore-to-ship operation, this vessel is also expected to perform ship-to-ship LNG bunkering using an LNG bunkering vessel.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Kyushu Electric Power will continue to work proactively to both continue stable fuel transportation and reduce environmental impact.
